Oatmeal baths are nothing new. But in the interest of self-care, they’re becoming far more popular- and with good reason! Oats can help soothe inflamed skin, exfoliate and keep your skin silky because it doesn’t remove any natural oils.
In my experience, oatmeal baths and masks have mostly been used to help alleviate pain. From a rash, sunburn or eczema.
However, oats also help keep the skin nourished and healthy outside of issues as well. Like most real foods, oatmeal actually has lots of antioxidant properties. You can reap some of these by eating oats regularly or using them on your skin like in this soak.
And this particular DIY oatmeal bath does even more than help keep your skin healthy– it also helps you relax!
The addition of dried lavender flowers helps both the mind and the body relax.
Lavender is often used to induce calm and relieve anxiety. But it can also be used on irritated skin. Adding it into your bath helps just as much aromatically as it does on your skin– making this soak close to a detox bath.
The final ingredient in the soak is baking soda. An especially useful powder when it comes to setting your skin back in balance (again, often used with skin irritation) or if you need to help remove odor, like from a sweaty workout.
Quick tip: I ground both the oats and the lavender for this recipe to save you the sanity of a messy bathtub. However, if you’re short on time, simply tie everything into a cheesecloth and drop that into the bath instead! Same effect and still no cleanup 😉

DIY Oatmeal Bath
- 1 cup regular oats
- ¼ cup baking soda
- 1/8 cup dried lavender
- In a grinder or food processor, grind the oats and lavender together until you reach your desired texture. (I like to leave some of the oats intact to help exfoliate but it does make for a messier bathtub.)
- Mix the baking soda into the oatmeal until combined. Toss in a jar and tighten the lid until you’re ready to use it!
